How to Prepare Your HVAC System for Florida Hurricane Season

1. Secure the Outdoor Unit
High winds can easily dislodge or damage your outdoor condenser unit. Ensure it is securely fastened to its concrete pad using hurricane straps or tie-downs. If you’re unsure how to do this, contact a professional HVAC technician.
2. Clear the Surrounding Area
Remove any loose objects, patio furniture, potted plants, and debris from around the outdoor unit. Trim back any overhanging branches or shrubs that could break off and strike the unit during high winds.
3. Turn Off the Power
Before the storm hits, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the main electrical panel. This protects the system from power surges and lightning strikes, which are common during severe weather.
4. Cover the Unit (Carefully)
You can cover the outdoor unit with a specially designed, breathable hurricane cover to protect it from flying debris. Never use a plastic tarp or garbage bag, as this traps moisture and can cause severe corrosion to the internal components. Remember to remove the cover immediately after the storm passes before turning the unit back on.
5. Schedule a Post-Storm Inspection
After the storm, do not turn your AC back on immediately. Inspect the outdoor unit for visible damage, flooding, or debris lodged inside.
