The COMPACT Act — Know Your Rights
Under federal law, any veteran experiencing a suicidal crisis can go to ANY emergency room and receive free, immediate care — regardless of VA enrollment status. The COMPACT Act (2020) ensures that no veteran is turned away in their darkest moment. You do not need to be enrolled in VA healthcare. You do not need prior authorization. Walk in, identify yourself as a veteran in crisis, and you will receive care.

Can I use the Veterans Crisis Line if I am not enrolled in VA healthcare?
Absolutely. The Veterans Crisis Line (988, Press 1) is available to all veterans, service members, and their family members — regardless of VA enrollment status. Under the COMPACT Act, you can also receive free emergency care at any ER during a suicidal crisis.
