What Is R-410A and Why Is It Being Phased Out?

R-410A (also called Puron) is the refrigerant used in virtually every residential AC system installed between 2010 and 2024. It replaced R-22 (Freon), which was phased out for similar environmental reasons.

The EPA has classified R-410A as a high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant under the AIM Act. New production and import of R-410A was banned as of January 1, 2025. The replacement refrigerant is R-454B (also called Puron Advance), which has a significantly lower GWP.

How Does This Affect Your AC Repair Costs?

With new production banned, the existing supply of R-410A is finite and prices are rising. Here’s the real-world impact:

• Refrigerant recharge cost is increasing: A recharge that cost $300-$400 in 2023 may cost $500-$900 or more in 2025 as supply tightens.
• Leak repairs become more urgent: If your system has a refrigerant leak, fixing it promptly is more important than ever. Every pound of R-410A that leaks out is expensive to replace.
• Major repairs on old systems may not make sense: If your system needs a compressor replacement AND a refrigerant recharge, the total cost may approach or exceed the cost of a new R-454B system.

Should You Replace Your AC System Now?

Not necessarily — but here’s how to think about it:

• System under 8 years old, no leaks: Continue maintaining it. No action needed unless it fails.
• System 8-12 years old with a refrigerant leak: Get the leak repaired, but start planning for replacement. The math on R-410A recharges gets worse every year.
• System over 12 years old: Strongly consider replacement before the next failure. A new R-454B system will be more efficient, have a 10-year warranty, and eliminate R-410A cost exposure entirely.
• System needs a major repair (compressor, coil): Get a replacement quote before approving the repair. The numbers may favor replacement.
